Parish Church- Grave slab, Kendal

Holy Trinity\Kendal Parish Church

For such a huge parish church, and especially one boasting such a long history, it was surprising to find only a single grave slab here. Situated against the wall of the outer North aisle, just West of the vestry door, this limestone slab probably dates from the late 13th century.

It depicts a cross with intricate terminals on a square stepped base. To the right of the cross shaft, a shield is carved in relief, with a large shield overlaying both cross and sword. The grave slab is in excellent condition, probably indicating that it has been indoors for all or most of its life.

Took a photo of this cross slab today, and trawled the internet trying to find information on it. I should have known it would be on your blog!
